Vic Mitchell

On Tuesday, September 7th, our class had a guest speaker Vic Mitchell. Vic currently is the senior associate athletic director/Head Womens basketball coach at Shorter University.  Vic began by giving us some of his background information. He achieved his graduate and undergraduate degree from University of Georgia. After graduating Vic decided to do a graduate assistantship for the men’s basketball program to help pay for his schooling. He talked about how that was a great experience in his life by being in the right place at the right time because while he was there it was a time where two future NBA players where attending UGA. The most famous player was Dominque Wilkins. After graduating he took his first full time job at Reinhardt college as the head Men’s basketball coach.  He worked here for six years before he took his present position at Shorter University. He was first hired to be the women’s head basketball coach and cross country coach until he worked his way up to have the position associate athletic director he has today. Vic talked to us about why he left Reinhardt and moved to Shorter. He said that it was more important to him to work for a four year program opposed to the 2 year program Reinhardt was at the time. He also talked to us about all the growth of Shorter’s athletic program. The main growth he discussed was their new addition of their football program. He told us that since they added football they have had more student athletes come to Shorter, which he said was a huge benefit since they are a tuition driven school just like Reinhardt. After listening to Vic, I am beginning to understand how one job can often lead to another.
